Corporate Recruitment

How user research took this company from confusion to clarity.

Brand: Genie Ventures

Role: Product Manager and UX Designer

“When applying for a job I am trying to understand what the company does, how it’s structured and what it’s like to work there as well as to understand the role itself. I don’t want to have to ask questions that risk me looking ignorant.

I want to be able to access all the information I need easily so that I can gain a full understanding of the role.

The Brief

The company had recently rebranded and built a new website they were very proud of. Everyone agreed that the brand reflected the company’s passion and youthful energy. But during a recent recruitment drive the company had realised the new site, while looking and feeling very cool,  was not providing enough information for its main audience: potential recruits.

Senior Management were concerned they were failing potential recruits as feedback from new starters was that they hadn’t fully understood the company purpose and structure when applying.

The Research

Interviews

The perfect people were ready and available to interview about the recruitment process, the recent influx of new recruits. But the interviews turned out to be so fruitful it was difficult to know how to organise all the information that was needed.

Card Sorting

Card sorting was an effective technique to help us see how all this information could fit together in sensible groupings.

We used randomised groups to show us how they would organise the information. This helped to inform but did not dictate the structure of the site.
